Happy birthday to my temperemental brat of a tatay

I love and admire you so much, as a father, as my nanay's husband, as a leader, as a person

Im so lucky to be your daughter and i feel guilty that i'm not taking advantage of it

I should be learning more from you

We're not getting younger

And im dreading the day you wont be there anymore

Sulitin ko na ang pagiging anjan mo

Happy birthday!!!

The thing we severely lack, as a people, as a nation, is accountability. Rarely do we hold our politicians accountable to us, and they dont hold themselves accountable to us either. Case in point, our president re the reinstatement of chief Marcos:

"I do not have to explain to you, the whole Republic of the Philippines and the critics, why I made the order for him just to sit down and do not remove him," he added. http://www.gmanetwork.com/news/story/591317/news/nation/duterte-i-don-t-need-to-explain-why-i-kept-cidg-8-chief-marcos)

Im not disregarding those who actually demand accountability (there are lots, especially now) but as a nation talaga, hindi instilled na kailangan itong idemand from our politicians, and hindi instilled sa politicians na accountable sila sa atin. HINDI NATIN UTANG NA LOOB SA KANILA ANG TRABAHO NILA OKAY. And this is why corruption remains rampant, and also why im terrified of the du30 presidency: with his blatant disregard for accountability, we're just inching closer and closer to a dictatorship.

Accountability is not just "I did this" but also "I did this because" and "I acknowledge the consequences of this action and am ready to face them"

Duterte's drug war is lazy. Ultimately, it is an extremely lazy approach, masquerading as busy, masquerading as may ginagawa. It is a narrow, short-sighted (non)solution. It is cowardice. The long, effective road takes work. So much work that the president chooses an easy promise instead, a stand that has already taken 5000 lives. It's easy to just say, "you will die". It's more difficult to conduct a holistic approach: it is an issue of public health, education, social welfare... studies have already been made that drug wars are ineffective(http://www.economist.com/node/13237193), why are we still participating in it??? The infuriating part about this drug war is that we are paying for this, and dying because of this (collateral damage, anyone?), and in the end it's all so pointless.

Just read nytimes' Fractured Lands and god what a harrowing, depressing read. But necessary. And important. Grabe ang lala ng nangyayari sa middle east. Nakakagalit. Living a privileged existence in this country, minsan nakakaguilty that i have such a good life when fellow humans are going through this nightmare. But this also means we have the resources to help them. Heres what we can do.

Cant we all just call ourselves earthlings and strip off all borders and religion putek
